Dr. Abolfazl Akbarpour, Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Birjand, has designed and implemented an intelligent artificial intelligence-based platform for detecting defects and deficiencies in sewer networks
The system has been developed with the aim of improving the accuracy and speed of sewer network monitoring while reducing the time, cost, and risks associated with identifying defects and damage within the network.
As part of this project, the University of Birjand research team, with the support of the South Khorasan Province Water and Wastewater Company and in collaboration with Abniran Consulting Engineers Company, developed a software platform entitled the “AI-Based Intelligent Sewer Network Monitoring System.”
The software is capable of receiving and processing collections of video inspection images as well as short video recordings obtained during sewer network inspections. After analyzing the visual data, the system can identify existing defects within the network and determine both the type and location of each defect.
Approximately 1.3 million images related to sewer networks were used in the training and development of the platform.
The development of this platform represents an important step toward the digitalization and intelligent monitoring of urban infrastructure. It can contribute to greater accuracy in damage detection, improved decision-making, and more effective management and maintenance of sewer networks.
This system has been developed for the first time in Iran.
